The Toaru series is set in a world where supernatural abilities exist in a world of magic and technology, a world of sorcerers and espers battling for control and power in a world that resembles our own world. Or, as the YouTube personality “Gigguk” described in his YouTube video that has been viewed over 1.3 million times (I recommend you watch it to get a better feel for this anime series), “The Fascinating World of Index/Railgun and Why You Should Watch It”: “…a unique world that blends fantasy and science in a way I’ve never seen before…a shared universe I had been searching for an anime for so long…”
The Toaru series of anime consist of these anime…
(1) A Certain Magical Index (3 seasons 74 episodes + 6 OVA’s) Plot: The story is set in Academy City, a technologically advanced independent city-state located in the west of Tokyo, Japan. Toma Kamijo is a student and a Level 0 esper in Academy City. Index is a nun from Necessarius, a secret magic branch of the Church of England. His encounter with her leads him to meet others from the secret worlds of science and magic. Toma is unaware that his unusual power places him at the center of conflicts between the Sorcerers and Espers.
(2) A Certain Scientific Railgun (3 seasons 73 episodes + 3 OVA’s) Plot: The series focuses on the exploits of Mikoto Misaka who is the 3rd strongest of the Level 5 espers and her friends.
(3) A Certain Scientific Accelerator (1 season 12 episodes) Plot: The #1 esper Accelerator protects “Last Order”, a clone Mikoto Misaka.
(4) The Movie: The Miracle of Endymian
Plot: After Toma Kamijo and Index meet a singer and Level 0 esper named Arisa Meigo, they are suddenly attacked by magicians from the Church of England, who are then attacked by an Academy City security team. Toma soon finds out that not only does Arisa need his protection, but that Academy City itself needs to be saved from destruction…
