Remember when we used to have the “Big Three”, Naruto, One Piece and Bleach. These shows were called this because they represented the Golden age of jump shounen anime. And now that we’re looking for shows to replace them, the first name that comes to mind is Black Clover.
Standing at the forefront of modern battle shounen, Black Clover has received a lot of love and hate. This show is full of adventures, comedy, romance, all of which has been well-received by the community. Recently the reactions for the first major arc of the show was concluded on the channel. So, we wanted to write a recap/review for the viewers.
In the premise, the main characters Asta and Yuno were introduced. Orphaned since childhood, both of them and their foster siblings lived in the Church of the peaceful Hage village. They always admired the Wizard King, who had saved the kingdom in crisis and wanted to become like him. But unlike Yuno, who was gifted with powerful magic, Asta couldn’t use magic and but he never lost his will. Guided by his unwavering will and desire, he trained every day to build up his body and strength until he got his own Grimoire. But that never came to pass. Yuno received a legendary grimoire which boosted his abilities further, but Asta never received one, until…..(you have to watch the show for this one).
After training their newly acquired powers, the brothers set out to the royal capital to participate in the magic knights entrance exam. After reaching their destination, they realize that giving the exam would be the easiest part of the whole process. They came to know the discrimination that commoners have to face from the nobility or the royalty. Asta was had it worse because he could not use any magic whatsoever. So he was ridiculed and insulted by his peers. Despite all those obstacles, they manage to get into their respective squads after passing the exam. Yuno was accepted in the highest and the most powerful squad, The Golden Dawn. But Asta was chosen by a rugged and poorly mannered man, Yami and his squad, The Black Bulls. After arriving at the base of his new team, he is introduced to the other members. And it seems that things are going to be pretty rough from here on out.
After settling into his new room, he and his trainer, Magna Swing, take a tour. They also run into the other new recruit, Noelle. She is a head-strong royalty who likes to boss others around. She puts on this mask to hide her inability to control her powers. After helping her resolve her inferiority complex to her siblings, Asta gains her trust, they head out to their first mission.
The three members go to Magna’s home village to take care of some magical beasts in the forest nearby. After finishing their given task, they see a mist barrier around the settlement. After utilizing Asta’s abilities to cut through the magical barrier, they see the horrific sight of the residents being kept hostage under spikes of ice and a powerful mage threatening them to give him the magic stone. Asta immediately jumps into action, slicing the attacks from the enemy to protect the villagers. Magna, who was tired from earlier, tries to conserver his mana for a strong attack later. Noelle just helplessly stands there watching her comrades struggle while she can’t do anything to help. This feeling of desperation gives her a new power, which forms a strong barrier around the citizens. Now Asta and Magna try a combo attack to end the long fight. They are victorious. But before they could question them, the attackers committed suicide to conceal information. Then they all return to the base to report the happenings and they receive a star from the Wizard King himself.
This plot combined with amazing OSTs and great animation gives the viewers a very enjoyably show to watch. This was only the conclusion to the first arc there is much more to come after this. If you’ve watched it till here, I recommend you continue watching this great show.
