Mushoku Tensei S3 Episode 13 “The Diary” Yaboyrocklee Reaction — Mental Health Pillars

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Episode 13 is called “The Diary.” If you’ve been watching on Crunchyroll, Studio Bind’s been building toward this all season. Last week Rudy’s older self handed him a warning. This week he opens the diary — and the anime shows you the version of his life that broke him.

This Yaboyrocklee Reaction is the Main channel episode reaction we recorded Sunday.

Here’s what I clocked

Rudy puts his pillar on people. His psychological health — his mental health — is on a pillar connected to people like Sylphy. When somebody like Sylphy is removed, because that’s a pillar of his mental health, it diminishes and he goes away. I don’t think he has a pillar that if he’s just by himself, he is just good. He kinda has a dependency.

You can’t put your pillar connected to things like that. Speaking personally — even like, “Yeah, as long as my YouTube channel’s safe, I’m happy.” “As long as you’re in my life, I’m happy.” What if she’s not in your life?

If you have pillars that are tied to things, you can easily shatter. And that’s what I observed in him.

And it’s actually been consistent in the anime. He has pillars that are attached to people. We obviously know how he felt in the previous world — that’s the whole starting point of Mushoku Tensei. So even though he has other people to rely on in this life, his foundation or his mental health is just not grounded properly.

Grief

I actually wanted to talk more about his grief too.

Now his grief, his actions was crazy. But I personally — and I’m speaking for myself — this is why I wasn’t so hard on him too.

Sometimes when I get caught in a moment of pride, I am aware that pride has gripped me, and I’m making a bad decision. And I will get an uncontrollable anger. The thing is, I don’t do what he does, but I am aware that I’m not talking to people, I’m being short, and I am just mad, and I cannot escape this rage.

So I see that’s what Rudy was going through.

Grief is a normal response if you lose people. But between him not having the strength to support his mental health when he loses people, and the natural grief you will have when you lose someone you care about — when he gets hit with disaster like that, you gonna see that exact crash out.

And it’s just like, damn dog.

And then you drinking the bottle.

Episode 13 — “The Diary”

In “The Diary,” the anime doesn’t shy away from that either. When Rudy’s world falls apart in that future, the bottle shows up. I know from experience again — when you’re drinking alcohol and you have a bad emotion, it taints you even more.

Before we started this video, I actually commented when someone had irritated me just last night. I was in the middle of drinking my soju, and I had to disconnect from the conversation or I had to stop drinking my soju. I told that to my wife too. The moment I’m drinking soju and something irritates me, I’m like, “Ah, I can no longer drink this.” Cause I already know how I’m going to get. Something builds into me, and the alcohol is going to feed it.

That’s why you can’t rely on the bottle.

So anyways, all that happens — like, yeah man, I get it, man.

The lesson

But the lesson is be mindful where you put your pillar of strength in. You need to have pillars that when those people are removed or that circumstances move or your bank account hits zero, that you don’t jump off a building and end it, you know?

And that’s an important lesson.

Update (October 2026): what happened after this post

When I wrote this up, I figured a few of y’all who watch the reactions would read it. Then the short version I posted on X blew up. We’re talking about 561,000 impressions and over 5,600 likes as of mid-October. By far the biggest thing I’ve posted all year.

Here’s the post that started it:

I didn’t expect a post about Rudy’s pillars and the bottle to travel that far. But the replies told me something: a lot of people watched “The Diary” and felt the same thing, and they were glad somebody said it plainly.

“Media literacy” became the theme

The biggest wave of replies wasn’t about Rudy. It was about the conversation itself, people surprised that a reaction channel was actually talking about the episode instead of just yelling at it.

I appreciate that, Alex. For real. Same with this one:

I’m not going to pretend that didn’t feel good. But I want to be clear: we’re not trying to be a lecture channel. We react like fans. Sometimes the fan reaction just happens to include, “yo, that’s what happens when you put all your pillars on other people.”

Y’all caught that we were slow on the diary

Real ones noticed we took a while to clock that the episode was the diary itself.

We did lol. That’s part of watching it blind. You don’t get to rewind your first reaction.

The fans who added to the take

Some replies didn’t just agree, they built on it, and I want those on the record here.

That’s exactly it. Lose your strongest pillar first and everything after it falls harder.

This is the part people miss when they argue about the wives. It’s Rudy who depends on them, not the other way around. The show has been consistent about that since Season 1.

The alcohol question

One reply asked the question I’ve thought about the most since:

Here’s where I landed. He’s mentally mature enough to recognize it, and he should reject it. But this is what happens when the worst parts of ourselves take over. We all know right from wrong. Sometimes we just want to give up and get lost, and some people never get found again.

If this were happening to someone else, Rudy could probably spot it and give them good advice. It’s always harder when it’s you. You have to step back and see the whole picture.

What I’d add now

Rewatching my own take a few weeks later, I stand by all of it. Here’s what I’d add:

  • Grief is normal. What I clocked is dependency on top of grief. Those are two different problems.
  • The bottle doesn’t calm a bad emotion, it feeds it. That’s not a Rudy lesson, that’s a life lesson.
  • Build at least one pillar that’s yours alone, one that still stands when people leave, money hits zero, or circumstances flip.
  • Episode 14 “Resolve” showed the other side: Rudy choosing to change the future instead of living the diary. Watch the two back to back.

One more thing. Some replies came from people who said they aren’t even fans of the show:

That’s the best compliment a reaction channel can get. It means the episode said something about real life, and we managed to carry that out of the booth and onto your timeline.

Thank you to everybody who shared this, argued with it, or just sat with it. Some posts are worth more than the impressions, and this one reminded me why I make this content.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

What is Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Episode 13 called?

“The Diary” (日記). It aired September 20, 2026 in Japan and shows the doomed future Rudy reads about in Oldeus’s diary.

2

Who is Oldeus?

Fan shorthand for the older, future version of Rudeus who travels back in time with the diary to warn his younger self.

3

Why does Rudy fall apart in the diary timeline?

My read: grief plus dependency. His mental health rests on the people around him, so when they’re gone he crashes, and alcohol makes it worse.

4

Where can I watch the reaction?

It’s embedded at the top of this post and on the main YouTube channel.
