Code Geass is a “mecha” anime and was originaly released in 2006. It is generally considered to be one of the best animes of all time, it is also considered to have THE best ending of all time. It is an anime that requires you to think and it is hard to know exactly what’s gonna happen next. It has a bunch of action, interesting dialog/symbolism and a lot of fan service if you’re interested in that.

Watching this anime for the first time in 2026, I found it to be the most emotionally moving story I have ever experienced.
Beyond the MC’s remarkable idiosyncrasy, the series beautifully portrays the emotions of its many characters against a rich political and historical backdrop. Its sweeping, epic narrative made me deeply invested in each of them. Moreover, the voice actors bring the characters’ emotions to life with such richness and intensity that at times it feels almost like watching a theatrical performance. For that reason, I feel that this is one of those rare works where watching it in the original Japanese with subtitles adds tremendous value to the experience.
I had generally avoided mecha anime in the past, yet I found myself completely drawn into the dynamic battle sequences in this series. I don’t think this was simply because the battles themselves were exciting. Rather, each character has such a strong idiosyncrasy and enters these conflicts carrying their own beliefs, emotions, and purposes that I was constantly left wondering, “What is this person going to do next?” That anticipation made even the mecha battles genuinely exciting to me.
For reference, some of the anime I have watched include STEINS;GATE, STEINS;GATE 0, Summer Time Rendering, Charlotte, Jujutsu Kaisen, NARUTO, Madoka Magica, Attack on Titan, Mushoku Tensei, Lycoris Recoil, the Monogatari Series, Sword Art Online, and Chainsaw Man. All of them have left a strong impression on me, but at least for me personally, Code Geass surpasses them all. I consider it the greatest anime I have watched so far.
