A Character Is Not the Author: How I Argue About Anime Online (and How You Can Too)

One sentence of mine did more numbers this month than anything else I posted: “You guys know that a character is not always correct right?”

Over 1,300 likes. Over 26,000 impressions. For a one-liner. That tells me a lot of people are tired of the same argument showing up under every anime post, so let me break down how I think about it.

The post that set it off

The author of Mushoku Tensei said Rudeus has a child’s brain. Somebody answered with a screenshot of Rudy’s own line, “Compared to me who’s 34, they’re like youngsters,” and asked if the author was disagreeing with himself.

I replied with the short version in the same thread: what a character thinks and what the author says is true are two different things. Very often, a character is simply wrong.

That’s writing 101. If every character were right about everything, there’d be no story. Characters misread each other, lie to themselves, get stuff wrong about their own lives. Rudy does it all the time. That’s the point of him.

“But the author can contradict himself”

The replies came in fast. Some were good-faith, some weren’t.

Can an author make a mistake? Sure, they forget things. Continuity slips happen. But the author is basically the god of that universe. When a character says something and the story shows you otherwise, that’s usually not the author contradicting himself. That’s the author showing you the character is wrong.

This one came up a lot: Rudy is “mentally 34.” Okay, and? Being 34 in your head doesn’t make every thought you have correct. I know plenty of grown men who are wrong daily. I’m one of them some days.

Opinion vs fact: the debate that taught me something

The bigger lesson for me came from a different Mushoku argument the same week, about Oldeus, Aisha, and whether one of Rudy’s jokes was a “clear” joke or just a joke. Here’s the post I quoted:

We all agreed he was joking. We just disagreed on how clear it was. And what I noticed is that a lot of people don’t know the difference between their opinion and a fact.

Two people can watch the exact same scene and come out with different reads, and neither one can be proven. If I say it’s not a clear joke, that’s my opinion. If you say it is, that’s yours, and quoting the scene ten times doesn’t change that.

When I argue, I know what I’m saying is my opinion. A strong one, but still an opinion. I’ll listen to how you support yours, and I want you to listen to how I support mine. Maybe yours ends up stronger. Maybe we agree to disagree.

Your opinion can be supported by facts. That doesn’t make your opinion a fact. More people need that skill.

What good-faith pushback looks like

Not everybody who disagreed with me was being difficult. This reply is a good example. They laid out their read, explained why, and kept it moving.

I understood what they were saying. I just weighed Rudy’s history differently, including who he was before he reincarnated. That’s a normal disagreement, and it’s the kind of conversation I actually enjoy.

Why the timeline feels so negative

There’s a reason these arguments get so loud. Someone pointed out that most Mushoku reactors have solid media literacy, but X makes it feel like everyone is a hater.

Here’s what I’ve learned running an account: if I post that I really like a show, I might get three hearts. If I post that a show is garbage, I’ll get a ton of comments arguing with me, and all of it counts as engagement. So people farming clout or revenue will say anything to get attention.

I don’t farm hate. It’s bad for your mental health, and it’s not what I want from my life.

My rules for arguing about anime online

  • A character saying it doesn’t make it true. Watch what the story shows you.
  • Know when you’re stating an opinion. Say so, and support it.
  • Listen to the other person’s support before you fire back.
  • “Agree to disagree” is a real ending, not a loss.
  • Don’t feed engagement bait. If someone’s farming, let them farm alone.
  • Enjoy the show anyway. I still love Mushoku no matter how many of these threads I get pulled into.

Drop your own rule in the comments. I’m curious what keeps you sane in these threads.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

Does a character speaking mean the author agrees?

No. Authors write characters who are wrong, biased or lying to themselves all the time. Judge the story by what it shows, not by any one line of dialogue.

2

Isn’t Rudeus “mentally 34,” so he should know better?

Mental age doesn’t make someone right. Rudy’s whole arc is about a grown man repeating mistakes and slowly working through them.

3

How do I tell an opinion from a fact in an anime debate?

If two people can watch the same scene and reasonably read it differently, it’s an opinion. Facts are things like episode numbers, dialogue that’s actually in the episode, and what happens on screen.

4

Where can I watch Rock’s Mushoku Tensei reactions?

Full episode reactions are on the main YouTube channel, and discussion clips are on the Yaboyrocklee Highlights channel.
