Avatar: Seven Havens Episodes 1–4: From “This Is a Downgrade” to “I Recant”

I’ve been an Avatar fan since I was a kid. I follow the franchise, I had expectations, so I was more invested than normal going into Avatar: Seven Havens. And I’ll own it: before it even premiered, I called it a downgrade.

Then I watched it. Here’s how I went from hater to hooked in four episodes.

The clip that set me off

A day before the premiere, an exclusive clip dropped, and I wasn’t feeling it.

I’d been saying it since the trailer reaction. Based on that clip, they needed to put the food back on the stove and cook it properly. Some of y’all called me out for judging the whole show on a few clips:

Fair, and here’s how I see it: judging from a few examples is just normal pattern recognition. You draw the most likely conclusion, and sometimes you find out you were wrong. I said I’d update my opinion once I watched it, and I did.

Episode 1: I recant

First episode wasn’t so bad. I said what I said about that clip, but in context, with the full episode, it worked a lot better than I expected. Respect where it’s due.

Episode 2: they put it on Korra

This is where the show grabbed me.

Post by @yaboyrocklee (Yaboyrocklee | Content Creator & Entrepreneur): https://x.com/yaboyrocklee/status/2109626213731831921

We were sitting there like, “damn, they put that on Korra.” The last Avatar is blamed for doomsday, so the title itself is a target. No wonder Pavi is hoping it isn’t her. Pavi is easily my favorite of the twins. Her whole energy is “none of this is my business, I’m trying to chill.”

Y’all had better theories than me in the replies:

Episodes 2–3 and the bending debate

That Episode 2 storm, where it took a whole squad of earthbenders to brace the gate, got everybody talking about how much bending has changed since the old days.

I didn’t even catch that at first. You’re comparing literal prodigies like Toph and Bumi to regular benders. And it’s not just that the number of benders is going down. The world doesn’t seem to have the same kind of conflict as before, and conflict sharpens skills.

There was also a gross side of the comments this week, people acting shocked that a show inspired by India has South Asian-looking characters.

The word “Avatar” itself comes from India. A lot of fans don’t realize how much of their favorite media draws on Indian culture, history and religion. Much respect to the people calling that out.

Episode 4: “The Faceless” and propaganda

Post by @yaboyrocklee (Yaboyrocklee | Content Creator & Entrepreneur): https://x.com/yaboyrocklee/status/2111453768118133164

Somebody saw the Avatar, eyes flickering red, and whatever that is, it’s in more people now. My read? That’s the Vaatu homie. (For the record, the producers call it “The Anomaly” and say it’s not what you think. I’m keeping my theory until the show proves me wrong.)

But here’s the thing: you can’t nurture hate that doesn’t already exist. These people weren’t born hating the Avatar. They used to love the Avatar. The show literally tells you: “My whole life, I was taught to hate the Avatar.” They tell it at festivals.

Propaganda planted it. The dark force just waters it. Think about that in your own country. How much of what the crowd hates did they come up with on their own?

There are often exceptions. For starters, there have never been twin Avatars. These girls existing is already unprecedented, so it shouldn’t be surprising that what they do is unprecedented too. Korra was a prodigy who knew other bending before she was taught. These kids probably don’t know they’re not supposed to be able to do something, so they just do it. I expect the show to explain why.

Where I’m at

From “downgrade” to tuning in every week. Would you want the Avatar job knowing what the last Avatar left behind? Let me know in the comments, and catch the reactions as we go.

Since this post went up, the biggest argument in my mentions has been Pavi versus Nisha. People are calling Pavi the weak twin. I don’t buy it:

And on Episode 4, “The Faceless,” the part that stuck with me is how the hate toward the Avatar is being grown on purpose:
