Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Episode 14, “Resolve,” closed out the first cour, and my timeline turned into a courtroom. Rudy sits Sylphie and Roxy down, tells them about Eris, and the house has to decide whether a third wife walks through that door.
Some people watched that and said the show finally went too far. Not the fighting. Not the magic. The marriage. That’s the part they call unrealistic. And honestly? That made me laugh, so let’s talk about it.
This is a fans vs me recap. I’m putting the strongest pushback I got right next to my replies so you can judge it for yourself.
The take that started it
Here’s the post that got the whole thing going. Somebody said the show’s portrayal of polygyny is “extremely unrealistic,” and that you’re supposed to give each wife her own home.
@Gurren69420 The way this show portrays polygyny is extremely unrealistic.
Just the idea of having all of them in one house is the worst thing you could do. You're supposed to give each one their own home.

Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Episode 14 “Resolve”
I’m always amused where people draw the lines on what’s acceptable based on what they consider realistic or not
Shooting fireballs
Summoning lightning
Levitating
Time travelFine
Being one of the most talented mages in the world at such a young age having multiple wives … unrealistic that’s where we draw the line
I’ll tell you what.
If today I suddenly woke up with the powers of Superman and the looks of Henry Cavill
I guarantee you multiple wives will be within my grasp
(not saying I want it lol)

That’s really my whole point. We sign up for a world with mana, demon kings, dragon gods and a man who came back from the future with a diary. All fine. But one of the most talented mages alive having three wives who love him? That’s where people draw the line.
If you’re going to judge a fantasy show on realism, at least be consistent about it.
“But there are no consequences”
The same person came back with a better argument, and I respect it. Their issue wasn’t the fireballs. It was that Rudy faces little to no consequences, Sylphie accepts it right away, and the show takes itself seriously, so they want serious realism.
@yaboyrocklee Is the fact that he got little to no consequence for it. Sylphy instantly accepts it.
If they were making a joke out of Polygyny I wouldn't mind it so much but it takes itself very serious. So if the show is being serious I expect some realism.

My reply:
I’ve seen good women get cheated on by bums, jobless moms for years and not leave them, we can throw in domestic abuse etc.
People do stay with cheaters less qualified than Rudy lol.
I see why you don’t like it, but you keep throwing in the fact that it’s unrealistic because it doesn’t have consequences
People get away with a lot and face no consequences
Rudy suffers in other ways, he has a far from perfect life
Really really the main thing he has going is high skills as a major and great wives

Here’s where I stand. Real life is full of people getting away with things. I’ve seen good women stay with men who had way less going for them than Rudy. So “nobody would accept this” doesn’t really hold up for me.
And Rudy doesn’t get off free. This is the same season that showed us the diary, the future where he loses everybody and crawls into a bottle. This man pays in other ways. His life is far from perfect. The two things he really has going for him are his skill as a mage and his wives.
Did Sylphie flip-flop?
This was the most-liked pushback I saw on the episode: why is Sylphie suddenly against a third wife when she already told him he could?
Why is sylphie suddenly against marrying a 3rd wife even though she told him he can? https://t.co/U4i48ZrShG

@Null_Troy She literally explained lol. Eris broke his heart and he was aggressive she said when she healed his pain.

The scene answers this itself. Sylphie is the one who found Rudy after Eris left. She saw the damage up close: he was hurt, a little violent, aggressive. Her rule was never “no more wives.” Her rule is that the woman has to love him as much as she does, and that she doesn’t want to see him back in that dark place.
@yaboyrocklee It was a misunderstanding

My reply:
@Null_Troy Again tho, that was explained in the scene. Rudy explained it was a misunderstanding so now she she knows and will make a decision when they meet. Did you watch it? Honestly?

Rudy explains it was a misunderstanding, so now Sylphie knows. She’ll make her decision when they actually meet. That isn’t a flip-flop. That’s a wife doing her job.
Realism vs relatable
One fan said what I was thinking better than I could. Mushoku isn’t “realistic,” but the feelings in it are believable.
Some of y’all are saying Re:Zero, but tbh, I don’t think Re:Zero is realistic. It’s a great show, but being realistic isn't quite true
Everything portrayed in Mushoku Tensei, as extreme as some situations can get, still feels somewhat believable irl. The characters’ reactions, flaws, relationships, and consequences feel like things real people could experience.
But if we’re being real, no normal human should be able to go through everything Subaru goes through on a daily basis and still function the way he does. Re:Zero is incredibly good at portraying suffering, but that doesn’t necessarily make it realistic.

@anneth_arc This is exactly it.
Fireballs and time travel? Fine.
One talented mage with multiple wives? Suddenly “unrealistic.”
The feelings in this show hit closer to real life than people want to admit.
LOL. SMH

That’s why the show gets under people’s skin. The reactions, the flaws, the guilt Rudy feels sitting across from Sylphie and Roxy all hit close to home. So when the show takes a turn people don’t like, “unrealistic” is the easy label to grab. But the guilt is real. The hesitation is real. The way Roxy holds everybody to Sylphie’s own words is real.
Wait, people dislike Roxy and Sylphie?
While all this was going on, someone said the more people see of Roxy and Sylphie, the less they like them. I had to stop scrolling.
The more people see of roxy and sylphie the less they like them lol https://t.co/gqDPH8icU6

It’s the opposite for me. The more time I spend with them, the more I like them. Sylphie is the HBIC of that house, and Roxy respects that Sylphie was there first while still having her own say. That’s mature writing.
So what is the point of all this character work?
My favorite version of this debate wasn’t about realism at all. It asked what the story is for if the wives don’t hold each other up.
I'm not expecting this polygamy to be like Uzui's. However, I hope his wives will stay supportive of him and each other and change him for the better, especially Eris.
Otherwise, what is the point of Rudeus' character development and the story as a whole? https://t.co/2m4wGaI45W

@FineFictMen If Sylphie, Roxy, and Eris ain't holding each other up in that house, then what was all the character work for. Especially Eris.

That’s the real test for the second cour. If Sylphie, Roxy and Eris end up holding each other up in that house, all this character work pays off, especially for Eris. If it falls apart, people will have a real reason to complain, and it won’t have anything to do with fireballs.
